We just about go through an ice storm every year here in NC and I don’t really like wearing puffer coats so I always make sure my winter wardrobe is stocked with layerable pieces. My layering essentials consist of a button down of any kind, pullover sweater, cardigan, a leather jacket or blazer, a fur or menswear coat, and scarves.
Today, my base started with a mohair knit, basic faded black skinnies, and black suede boots. I always start out with my thinnest pieces first, which meant this duster cardigan went on next. I chose a duster cardi because it adds some nice movement to a super packed-on outfit.
Then, I threw on a blanket scarf to cover my neck and ears/face (if necessary). A blanket scarf is super versatile because you can basically wrap yourself up in any way necessary to fend off the wind chill or simply keep warm during prolonged periods of being outside. You can also bury your hands in them if you happen to forget gloves like I always do.
At this point, you can throw on two coats, but I’m not in New York or Boston so one was enough. I chose a menswear silhouette since it provides extra room for all these layers while allowing me to move around freely at the same time. As a mom, I find these layers practical and wearable when I’m hustling to get my kids together, run errands, and drive. You can also throw on any other accessory – this fedora protects my head quite well so it came along with me.
Off I go…have a good weekend and keep warm fellow east-coasters!
